The South Island ski areas are revered for their long season and awesome snow. Typically the South Island ski areas are the first in Australasia to open. The 2012 year got off to a great start with both Mt Hutt and Coronet Peak open from 9th June 2012. All other ski resorts have opened during June and early July. Most didn't close until 7 October. One ski area remained open until 14th October!
In 2013 the ski areas are planning on opening from early June for the season.
